John Malkovich Talks Vulture Role in Defunct Spider-Man 4

Earlier this year it seemed like Spider-Man 4 was shaping up with both Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst back on board with a new adversary to take down. At the time, John Malkovich had been rumored to star as the villain Vulture but before he could go in for a costume fitting the entire movie was scrapped by Sony. Months later at a recent press junket the actor was asked about his involvement with the film and whether or not he knows what caused the studio to pull the plug.

It turns out that even though Malkovich is an acclaimed and accredited actor he might have been one of the reason’s Sony was displeased with the way things were going.

“Well, I think a lot of the people who sort of follow that genre… I’m not sure, I never really spoke with Sam about this, but I’m not sure they â€" maybe the kind of fanbase, the fanboys â€" either didn’t approve of that character as an adversary for him to some extent…or maybe the studio. Or maybe that was totally unrelated to why it fell apart.”

This was a missed opportunity because not only is he talented but he looks just like the character in the comics. They’re like twins! He was then asked if he was disappointed at how everything played out and understandably he was.

“Yes [I was disappointed],” he says. “But because I like Sam and I like Toby [Maguire] and all that stuff, and the producers, two of whom I’d met before because I’d been offered the first [film] … I came to like them, so sure why not? But it didn’t play out.”

It appears that the dynamic between the creative types who worked on the film were all on the same page, it was Sony who had the issue. It’s doubtful that Malkovich was the reason the movie fell flat. There were several things that director Sam Raimi let the studio get away with in Spider-Man 3 that ended up ruining it and this time he probably wanted more control.

What do you think of Malkovich’s thoughts on the film? Why do you think Spider-Man 4 was scrapped?
