Lea Michele: Managers told me to get a nose job, that I wasnât âpretty enoughâ
Sheâs got no plans to take a break. âI donât stop,â Lea says. âItâs my nature. People have to tell me to slow down. I plan on playing every role on Broadway. I want to do Evita. I want to do Sweeney Todd with [Glee costar] Chris Colfer. We want to do Wicked. Iâll be Elphaba and he wants to play âGuy-linda.â I want to do movies, make music. Glee is only the beginning.â
Not being nominated for a Tony for Spring Awakening: At 19, with a role in the rock musical Spring Awakening, she and her costars became the toast of New York. (âI didnât get a [Tony] nomination like the boys did, which was a big learning experience for me,â she says, still disappointed.)
Lea looks different: âIâm five foot three. I donât look like a lot of other people, you know what I mean? I look like Iâm 12,â says Lea, whoâs wearing a cream top she found at Anthropologie the day before and matching shorts. (Those sunglasses are from Urban Outfitters. âIâm not a big spender.â) She gets called out for her unconventional features all the time, but Lea doesnât let it bother her; if anything, sheâs used to it. âHow many managers told me, âGet a nose job. Youâre not pretty enoughâ? But I proved them wrong.â
Now she admires the popular girls in Hollywood: Penélope Cruz (who Lea thought wouldnât recognize her but who countered, âDo you think I donât have a TV?â), Blake Lively, Jennifer Aniston (especially for posing as Streisand in Bazaar: âIt was awesome; I really wanted to do thatâ), and her sometime costar Gwyneth Paltrow, who ânever gets it wrong.â
More on Gwyneth: âI am obsessed with Gwyneth Paltrow,â Lea says. The day they met, they were rehearsing a Chicago routine for Glee. âI was nervous and said, âI donât think I can do that dance move.â She said, âYou can do it.â She wasnât afraid of anything. I love talking with Gwyneth. She just gives good advice. She said, âDonât ever read anything about you.ââ
Lea recently had to kiss Ashton Kutcher in the upcoming romantic comedy New Yearâs Eve. âIt wasnât enough,â she says. A practical joke he played involved him opening the door naked save for a towel. If heâd dropped it, âI might have blacked out.â
On eating: It would give the tabloids something to write about other than saying sheâs too skinny, which she chalks up to her vegetarianism and âthe Glee dietâ: âMy schedule is insane, but I can out-eat you.â (This over oatmeal.)
Lea is new to the game: âPeople have to remember this is all new for us,â Lea says. âWeâre all reasonably young, except for Cory [Monteith], whoâs old.â (Heâs 29.) âIâve learned some lessons,â she continues. âBut people are going to say what they want to say. I know who I am, and Iâm not perfect.â
