Girls: Season 1 Episode 7: Welcome to Bushwick a.k.a. The Crackcident â TV Review
Last nightâs Girls stepped out of Hannah and Marnieâs apartment and ventured into a warehouse in Bushwick. It was an eventful night that focused on all four gals and their party etiquette. Apparently, Jessa likes to throw wine bottles at âcrustyâ punks, while Hannah tries to avoid alcohol at all costs. The party was a good idea because âWelcome to Bushwick a.k.a. The Crackcidentâ turned out to be the best episode yet.
Find out why in our review belowâ¦
Â
The Players:- Director: Jody Lee Lipes
- Writer: Lena Dunham, Jenni Konner
- Cast: Lena Dunham, Jemima Kirke, Zosia Mamet, Allison Williams
At a raging party in the Bushwick section of Brooklyn, Hannah sees a different side of Adam. Jessa lures the sender of an anonymous text message, and Marnie finds out Charlie has moved on. Meanwhile, Shoshanna accidentally gets high on crack.
The Good:- Calm Down Wild Girl: Jessaâs whole flirty relationship with her married boss came to an abrupt end. There in the ER, with him crying on her lap, Jessa had a moment of realization. âI canât do this kind of thing anymore,â she says. Translation: she canât keep acting like a wild girl. We donât know much about Jessaâs past, but in that moment of clarity, we learn that sheâs trying to grow up.
- Adamâs not the Jerk: So, Hannah sees Adam (in a shirt!) outside his natural habitat. She meets his friend, Tako no âCâ, who informs Hannah that her boy toy is a recovering alcoholic who loves to read books. Say what?! Hannah ambushes Adam, asking why he withheld his troubled past. âYou never asked,â he says. Now, before you call him a douche for the 100th time, letâs think for a bit⦠Hannah is a selfish girl who only talks about her problems. Sheâs never made an effort to know Adam. Thus, his infuriating omission is justifiable. Until now, we always heard Hannahâs side of the story. And that probably made us think poorly of Adam. But guess what? Both are to blame for their dysfunctional relationship. The show ends shortly after Adam asks Hannah, âDo you want me to be your fucking boyfriend?â Itâs an aggressive argument that sheds some light on their relationshipâs future.
- Shoshannaâs Crackcident: Leave it to Shoshanna to accidentally smoke crack out of a âglass cigarette.â Itâs cute that her initial reaction to it is the fear of her parents finding out.
- Physical Comedy: Last nightâs episode relied on a lot of physical comedy for laughs. Shoshannaâs attack on Ray was belly-achingly funny. Seeing a pint size girl bring a six-foot man to his knees was the highlight of the episode. Also, Jessaâs incident with the punks was shockingly funny. She âaccidentallyâ drops a bottle of wine on them and instead of apologizing, she hurls insults. And who could forget Hannahâs bike accident? She just lies there on the pavement like a dead animal. Priceless.
- Marnieâs Still Annoying: Itâs hard not to enjoy Marnieâs unhappiness. In many ways, she deserves it. Sheâs just so selfish. After seeing Charlie with another girl, she obsesses over the problem by boring strangers with her pitiful problems. Then she runs into Elijah, Hannahâs ex-boyfriend, and obsesses some more. We also find out she made-out with Elijah while he was Hannahâs boyfriend. What the hell?! You see, Marnie IS an awful person.
Watching the leads outside of their comfy apartments was great fun. Itâs interesting to see how they interact with people besides each other. Zosia Mamet continues to prove that sheâs a great asset to this show. Her character might be the dimwit of the group but she sure brings in the most laughs.
Rating: 9/10Girls airs at 10:30 p.m. on HBO.
