Zach Galifianakis To Star In ‘A Confederacy of Dunces’

After 30 years of attempts, it’s hard to believe that John Kennedy Toole‘s comic masterpiece A Confederacy of Dunces will ever get a film adaptation. But we can dream, can’t we? Vulture reports that Zach Galifianakis has been cast to play our dearest Working Boy, Ignatius J. Reilly, with Muppets director James Bobin at the helm.

The A Confederacy of Dunces cinematic adaptation has endured a long and fatal history, with many of the actors who were set to play Ignatius dying before the project took off.

The first attempt to bring the movie to the screen was in 1982, with John Belushi in the title role. However, a few days before meeting with execs, Belushi died of a drug overdose. Projects set to star such deceased talents as John Candy and Chris Farley also, sadly, came and went. The latest attempt was about 10 years ago, when Steven Soderbergh was attached to the project with Will Ferrell set to star and, again, the project did not pan out, leaving the future of this project very uncertain, at best.

And yet, it now appears as if the adaptation is finally happening, and Galifianakis seems like the right man for the job (more so than Ferrell, anyway). Not only does he fit the physical description of Ignatius, but he’s the kind of actor that can get away with a lot and still be loved by his momma (and audiences).

The script is being written by Cedar Rapids‘ Phil Johnston, and produced by Scott Rudin and Paramount Pictures. Hopefully Galifianakis and co. are able to survive this 30-year-old curse and finally get this project off the ground.

And just for fun, here’s an Ignatius quote â€"

I do not understand this compulsion of mine for seeing movies; it almost seems as if movies are “in my blood.”

Yup, we can relate to that.

Do you think A Confederacy of Dunces will finally get made? Is Galifianakis the right man for the role?
