The new Division can’t catch a break. When they’re not chasing rogue agents, the government’s breathing down their necks. In “The Sword’s Edge,” Nikita and company learn the harsh truth about their jobs. Plus, the mole hunt hits a snag when Owen’s nearly killed.

Episode Title: “The Sword’s Edge”

Division’s latest mission puts them between a rock and a hard place. A former agent, who goes by Alexi Markov, has been elected President of Uzbekistan. He plans to assassinate the President of the U.S. if Division doesn’t step in. Unfortunately, the agency’s already in hot water with the Commander in Chief. Therefore, they have to protect the president without her knowing. Meanwhile, Owen and Alex’s mole investigation gets sidetracked by an explosion in medical.

 

The Good:

• Nikita and Ryan: For most of the episode, they were at each other’s throats. After weeks of friction they exploded and we loved every minute of it. Don’t get us wrong, we miss their sweet friendship. But their arguments were passionate and well-acted. We’ve never really heard Ryan raise his voice, or Nikita give such an icy glare.
• Hey, it’s that guy!: Did they really sneak Richard T. Jones into this episode? What a pleasant surprise. He must be the go-to guy for stuffy authority figures. He was a Court Services Officer on Judging Amy, an FBI Agent on Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles and a Governor on Hawaii Five-0. Now he’s on Nikita, rubbing elbows with the president as Commander Danforth.
• Dirty Laundry: We spend a lot of time viewing these characters as heroes. We forget most of them are convicted felons. While the gang discussed the future of Division, that was brought to the forefront. Before “recruitment,” Nikita was on deathrow and even Birkhoff was doing time. Is Michael the only who was just in the military? It was a sobering discussion.
• Mission: Impossible: Did anyone else have a Mission Impossible 3 flashback when Nikita was helping Michael impersonate Markov? They use similar masks in the movie, which Maggie Q starred in. Deja vu.

The So-So:

• Owen and Alex: So this is happening. We love both characters, but this pairing came out of left field. Owen and Alex steered clear of each other during seasons one and two. But some fans wrote fanfics and “shipped” them, without seeing a scene. The writers obviously picked up on that, but they need to pull it back. The matching butterfly tattoos were a bit much. Something tells us they just want Owen out of Mikita’s orbit. And what about Sean? Has he really thrown in the towel?

Overall:

“The Sword’s Edge” had a decent A-story, but we loved the Division drama more. Someone needed to explain the difference between trust and support to Ryan. The angst between the main characters was great to watch. Unfortunately, the overarching mole plot got lumped into Owen/Alex’s awkward side mission.

Rating: 8/10
